Curing all diseases and ailments helping or hurting?
So I know we all hate to see people die, duh. When we see that Susan's father was diagnosed with ALS and then Tommy's mother passes away from breast cancer and then we donate to cancer research and we do the walk for ALS. We hope that we never have to lose our loved ones and yet we inevitably do. Science has been working on a cure for cancer for decades, we now have a vaccine for chickenpox and measles which used to be common childhood rights of passage... now you're not even allowed to get a cold without someone scolding you for not getting the flu shot. It seems everyone is sick, or dying or doing everything they can to prevent it but is it really helping?
What would happen if we cured cancer or if no one ever got a cold or other mild ailment? Is this really helping the world?
6 years ago my grandmother passed away from Alzheimer's... for 10 years she didn't know who I was and slowly stopped walking, speaking and then stopped being able to eat and drink. In that 10 years she had survived two heart attacks and never got a cold. She passed away after a few days of family sponging her mouth with water. She looked like a skeleton with skin on. This image is etched into my mind and a part of me wished whole heartedly that she had died from a common cold, a quick way to end her suffering.
So what happens if we cure all of our common ailments? Does our quality of life really improve?
