Can I put a Muslin blanket in my month old’s crib?

She hates being swaddled and she’ll scream and flex her entire body until we take her out but she won’t go to sleep without a blanket on her. I’ve tried bundling her clothes so she stays warm that way, but I think she likes the weight of the blanket and not just the warmth because she will not sleep with just clothes on.

Right now I should be saying the right thing by saying “nothing in the crib” “no lose blankets.” We use the Muslin blankets and the first couple times when my son had been swaddled tight and he somehow managed to pull it over his head I freaked, and then I realized that I’m being overly crazy and the Muslin material is extremely breathable. He’s pulled his over his head hundreds of times and has been completely fine. The chance of her suffocating is of course always a risk but an extremely extremely low risk of that happening, The chance of her suffocating without a blanket or swaddle is still a risk just a very unlikely one. I would say try to do the safest way possible but don’t let people sit here and judge you for not following the AAP down to a t if the absolutely safest way possible isn’t working.

A blanket poses a risk for SIDS at this age. I wouldn’t. You can find weighted sleep sacks that give the feeling of a blanket but don’t pose the risk for sids like a blanket does. I would look into different sleep sacks. My son always hated being swaddled too

I don't always swaddle my son during the day (it can disturb him out of a deep sleep). So sometimes I put him in his cot with a blanket, or muslin wrap depending on how hot it is. I pull the blanket up under my sons arms & tuck it tightly in the side of his cot. He can roll to his side & arch his back, but the blanket isn't coming off. Also, because his arms are out it's almost impossible for him to pull it up over his face... finally, I only do this during the day when I can frequently check on him - not sure how I would feel doing this at night.

They should not have anything in their crib with them until at least a year old. It can be a serious problem if she pulls it over her face and can’t breath in the middle of the night. You are her mother though so you make the decisions you think are best for you LO. I personally highly recommend nothing at all on the crib though.

Our daughters NICU nurse told us that a thin blanket, such as a receiving or muslin blanket, is ok as long as you place it over them so the top edge is no higher than the nipples. They put blankets over her like this while she was in NICU and told us it would be fine at home too when she was discharged
