Next stage before a baby

Would anyone advice getting a puppy before trying for children? I know it sounds so cliche but I'm wanting to have children in the future and was wondering if people have found when they've got a dog it has highlighted how their other half acts with a major responsibly? We have been together four a bit years and I have still yet to get a ring so I thought a puppy may be a nice next stage in our relationship.
