What are your opinions on a virtual baby shower...?

We live 7 hours away from family. We were originally planning on throwing the shower one of the first weekends in March, but I will be about 34 weeks pregnant. We are also measuring ahead with baby by about a week. I realize it might sound selfish of me to say, “I don’t want to drive 7 hours in a car  to a party where everyone sits around and showers me with gifts and attention”, but I’ve never loved that feeling anyway and secondly, I really do think 7 hours in a car that pregnant would be pretty tough. I also do not want to ask guests to travel the 7 hours here to come and see me at MY house. I know it’s unrealistic and very tough on guests. My MIL was the one who brought up the virtual shower and initially, I shot it down because it seemed utterly tacky. Then I started to do some research. If done right, I personally think it could be okay. Just wanted some opinions, ideas, and I guess some tough love if I’m being utterly ridiculous. Thanks. 💕

What if you had the virtual shower, with a promise a few months after the baby is born to do a sip and see or some gathering by your relatives? That way they can all join in the excitement (plus you can do the meet and greet with everyone in one day).

Could you meet in the middle and make it a 3.5 hour drive for everyone? Find a party hall or something in between?

You could have someone who is home throw the party, open the gifts, etc, while you Skype in. That way people don't feel like their just sending you gifts for the baby. Personally I wouldn't send a gift if there wasn't a physical eveny (I always mean to and then totally forget so end up sending nothing).

I think if you’re happy with it and your family that’s the main thing. It’s nice for them to feel involved and celebrate and I’m sure they all appreciate that it’s a long way to travel heavily pregnant. They wouldn’t of suggested it if they thought it was selfish.

We did something similar. I live outside the US and all my family lives there. So my m sent out “invitations” with s letter written by me that said a bunch of nice stuff s f that if anyone wanted to send checks in my name, in the amount that they feel comfort with, my mom would deposit them and I’d use the money here. It worked out. We got plenty of donations and were able to use the money in stuff we wanted. I then sent out a handwritten thank you letter. They’ll get to meet our daughter in a few months. She’ll be 7.5 months old.

I had one thrown for me by my mom because I was on bedrest and my whole family is spread out in different states. It was a huge success and everyone loved they could be part of it even if we couldn’t all get together in person

Hi! We did something similar to that! I went into preterm labor a few days before our baby shower with my husbands family was supposed to be so I wasn't able to attend. He was able to go but they FaceTimed me the entire time and I got to watch him open all the gifts and it was actually still really fun. I was glad I was able to still at least be involved and we got a lot of things we needed. It obviously isn't as fun as the "typical" shower but it totally works and can still be fun 😊 People will still get to see your reactions to gifts and atleast get to see you virtually

We’re doing one! “A baby shower across the miles” we live 18 hours from family so my friend here is gonna send out invites for people to send us gifts from our registry and cards a certain week before baby is born.
