Help with building a bed

We are going to build a bed for our daughter. We have a baby due in August so we need her crib, plus she won’t sleep in a normal toddler bed (she’s almost 2) however she loves sleeping in her playpen. So we decided something like this would be nice for her. We really want to build it, not buy one. We are stumped though. We have no idea what kind of wood to buy that will hold up and be safe
