Tongue-tie clipping experience (long)
Aaand I cried. Thought I'd share, I'm wondering how common the tongue-tie is in this community?
Finally went to the consulation for my two-month old this morning! I've been using the nipple shield for it this whole time and I'd still be sore after feeding, the first two weeks without it were bad enough that my nipples were turning black with scabs. It was SO painful 😟 We found out that she also has a very slight lip tie, but the doctor said it wouldn't cause a problem like the tongue-tie. We went ahead and got just the tongue clipped. I've been nervous about the procedure and was fighting with myself the whole time about getting it done right then and there... I was feeling unsure right up to the last second.
In only another few minutes two nurses and the doctor came back in. They had me hold her head still and said that they wanted her to cry hard so they could easily cut the little bit of skin. They brushed some dental anesthesia on, thank goodness, but that certainly got her crying. The hardest part was watching the tools go in her mouth and hearing the two little snips of the scissors and seeing the blood, I burst into tears 😣 I'm pretty sure my husband was crying too, haha. The doctor assured me that was a really small amount of blood, sometimes it puddles up and that's okay too. The doc had me breastfeed without the shield seconds after it was snipped, and said that there's a little diamond shaped wound that I'm going to have to press on before every feeding for the next 10 to 14 days. I think I might have startled the doc when my milk let down, it always sprays about a foot from the other side when she first latches, the doc said she'd never seen that before 😆 She did say I have perfectly shaped nipples though, go me I guess?
I'm glad to say it's a HUGE difference with the pain, her latch used to feel like a vicegrip and now it feels perfectly tolerable! She slept the whole car ride home. After we got home I got her out of her outfit and let her nurse again- She doesn't like me pressing on her wound AT all, but she ate just fine afterwards, a shorter session than usual and fell asleep~ I hope getting the clipping done will save her trouble in the future!
