Friends with ex

So my boyfriend of 2.5 years broke up with me saying that we just don’t have the same core interests and even though he is still very much in love with me we just aren’t right for each other but he still wants me in his life and wants to be friends, I’m absolutely heartbroken and don’t know what to do about this I love him so much and I want him in my life but I don’t know if we can be friends. Has anyone else gone through this that can give me some advice on how they dealt with this situation
