When you said "I love you" to your significant other for the first time, what happened immediately after?

Did you have an intention of getting an "I love you too" back when you were the first one to say "I love you". Did you say I love you knowing that your significant other would say it back or did you not care what s/he'd say?

My husband said it first. 
We were 14. Had been dating for just 3 months. I was talking to him on the phone early before school. I stayed the night at a friend's and walked a few miles home to pick up my bag. He talked to me the whole way home. As I was walking through my front door we were saying goodbye. He said "I love you. I'll see you at school." He hung up before I could answer 😂 When I got to school I gave him a fist bump and said "I love you too."

We've fistbumped ever since.

My SO said it first I didn’t respond (we were out clubbing) so I wasn’t sure if that was the alcohol speaking. Couple days later we were outside and he told me that’s when I said it back.

My SO told me from the beginning that it takes him a long time to open up to people and let people in. He warned me that he might not say it for a while, which was okay. I fell for him pretty quickly but I told him I would wait til he was ready before I said how I felt cause I didn't want to pressure him. When he finally told me, he said it to me in person. I was leaving for work and I just kinda froze. Then I gave him this weird look and scurried away. I felt bad after but it caught me off guard.
