What worked for me
3 years ago I succeeded in meeting my weight loss goal by following a program outlined in a book: Move A Little, Lose a Lot by Dr. James Levine. The book walks you through instructions day by day for 8 weeks. The idea is to add more movement to your everyday activities, little by little. For me, the weight loss took longer than 8 weeks but I was used to the more active lifestyle so I was able to keep it up. This worked beautifully for me because I hate traditional exercising! I really recommend this book (cheap on Amazon, or check your local library.) Good luck!
