Do you allow contractors to complete work in your home when you are not there?

I want to have my house painted. It shouldn't take longer than a day, but I don't want to take it off work. A friend suggested just letting them do it when we are not home. Which would be really easy and convenient. Is it standard to leave contractors alone in the house? I would obviously be checking reviews ect...

My husband is a contractor and while HE respects others home, not all do. You should be there, but don't watch them like a hawk, it's pretty rude. But if it's someone you know well then sure, but if it's just someone you found via Google and you don't really know them then I wouldn't.

I never let anybody inside my home when I am not there.
when floors were installed,I was home.
I do not trust people,it takes a second for them to steal something and you'll never get that item back.

The 2 times I’ve done this- one time they slacked off and did less than stellar work when I was t there watching. The other time they disregarded my instructions about making sure our indoor-only cat didn’t get out.  I came home to a strange cat on my couch sleeping and my cat missing.  They also stole a very expensive flashlight that was on the counter.  (My cat was found hiding behind the washing machine.). So I don’t let contractors do work without my presence any more.

Personally I would be there to meet them when they arrive, then get to work a little late if necessary. Depending on your commute, you could stop by your house during your lunch break. You could even just take a half day, so you can be there as they are finishing up.

They would have to be pretty stupid to steal anything since they would be the first suspect. I would want to be home if possible just to make sure they get the right walls, the right color, etc. Mistakes happen.
