Do guys like to pay?

Im in a relationship and my boyfriend always wants to pay for my food or my movie ticket and stuff like that. We havent gone on any like dinner dates so hes only ever paying like 5 dollars max for my food or like 10 dollars for a movie ticket but i always feel bad and never want him to pay. But he always insists and said to me once that paying for me makes him feel good. Whats the deal with that? Is he just saying it to make me feel better or does paying actually make him feel good? I always buy him little things too, like ill surprise him with food and small things like that whenever i can so its not like its all one sided, but i cant stop feelin like he secretly hates to pay for me, idk, help.
