Hurts during sex

I got diagnosed with herpes type 1. I had my first outbreak and I’ve been taking the medication proscribed and it has cleared up. So finally after a long painful wait my boyfriend and I (who has type 1 too) decided to have sex. It still hurts down there and I’m nervous that pain will never go away during sex now. It feels dry when we try and it’s not like I wasn’t horny or anything because I was... it just felt like pain as he put his dick in. Will this ever go away😩
