Teaching 15 month old to Stop Biting People

Does anyone have any advice on how to teach a one year old to stop biting people? My son is 15 months old. I just got in a really bad argument with my So, his father, because I don't agree with popping my child in the mouth or anywhere above the neck while he's so young, no matter how lightly and he said that's the only way he knows to teach him not to do it and at first wasn't willing to find a way we both approved of because his parents did it to him and it was effective. Now he's saying if I can find a way that's effective he'll try it but until then he's going to continue lightly popping in the mouth because it's all he knows to do.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated. I want to find a better way to teach my son not to bite.
