Does the security at your kids school concern you?

Do you think it’s tight enough? My stepkids school is locked up so random people can’t walk in during the day, but I went to pick up my stepson for a dr appointment today and I tell them “im here to pick up blank blank for a dr appointment” and they just say ok, and call him out of class and let him leave with me without asking me who I am, asking for I’d, having me sign him out, nothing. I find that frightening, they just let kids leave with anyone who knows their name. Would this bother you?

That would bother me. We have a list of people we have to make that are approved to pick up your child. All doors are locked but one and it leads straight to the office. You cant reach the rest of the school without going through it. You have to sign the child out and show id

I feel like there should be at least some record of you taking him out of school, like you sign a piece of paper or something.

I think that the kid would not just go along with a stranger, so I dont think that better security is necessary.

At my kids school you have to be buzzed in at the gate, where there is a camera and intercom. There is security present around the school as well. Once you get to the main office, you have to provide your ID (they take a copy of it but I'm not sure for what). And once they verify you're on the approved list of names to pick your child, then they get called down. I'm happy with it, I wouldn't want just anyone to be able to go in and pick up my kids. If you're concerned about it, you should voice it to the school.

Wow. That is scary. I would complain. Better them fix their procedures now before a child is released to an unauthorized person!  We have a few kiosks in the office of my daughter’s elementary school. You have to scan the barcode on your ID/drivers license and it shows the children you are authorized for. You select which of your children you are checking out and the reason. Then the machine takes your picture. All this is sent to the office worker’s computer to verify and then they will call your child out of class. The process sometimes takes a little longer with multiple parents showing up at the same time. But with 700+ students, I’m glad they do not slack on security. The office workers know my daughter by name and her teacher’s name/extension and know I am her mom but I still have to go through the process each time.

They watch how the child reacts to you, so if the child didn’t recognise you for example they would step in and make you explain yourself

Nah, they make me feel safe. I don't have kids but I have a little brother that I take to school in the morning, seeing security puts me at ease.

My kid’s daycare has a code on the door. You can’t even get in the front door without having that code and if you don’t have it you have to ring the doorbell and wait for someone to come check your ID. Then you wait again while they check the kid’s paperwork to see if you’re authorized to take that child. To me, this is perfect.
Now at the school where I teach (4th grade) it’s a different story. You walk in the front office. Say, “I’m here to pick up Jimmy Jones from Mrs. Johnson’s class” and that’s it. They don’t check ID’s or the child’s school account to see if you can take that child. To me that is not okay. I think all schools need to crack down on security measures!

Not mine but the school my dad works at... I bring him lunch every week and it's a church/school combo and I walk in the back door with my kiddo and lunch box and walk to his office.. no security checks.. no RFID tag in.. nada...
