Dyeing my hair

For the longest I’ve wanted to dye my hair . I really want to do it but I’m scared because it’s my first time and I don’t want my hair to get damaged . I’m also going to be dyeing my hair myself, should I do it ? I have always said I wanted blue but the dude I realllyy like says purple . What do y’all think ? Should I do it ? And what color( btw I’m Mexican so I have really brown skin, maybe that’ll help pick a color that fits my skin tone best ) ?
