Did I mess up on my husbands birthday?

Question

I ordered him a 3 tier birthday box from Cheryls Cookies, gifted him a new blanket, 4 pairs of underwear, new razor and a beard care kit. Also pain stakingly made a cake from scratch 🙂
Plus, A card inside the card i simply wrote
"Happy Birthday! I love you!"
He was disapointed with the card asking why I did not spill my feelings or write something sentimental in the card...which was a card from the company you get to write out what you want it to say and they include it with the package 
I had no answer.... Except its not our anniversary or Valentines Day 
Did I screw up????
We have been married since 2008 I feel bad that he was seemingly upset with the card

It sounds like his love language is words of affirmation, and yours is gifts. You feel loved when he gives you a physical token of appreciation. That doesn't make you materialistic, it just means that you appreciate the time and effort it takes to give someone something meaningful. He appreciates what you say. He doesn't care as much about what you got him, he likes when you tell him what you love about him, why he rocks your world, etc. He should have been appreciative of any gift, and his reaction was immature. But it also sounds like you should talk more about how you express love to each other.

I get where hes coming from, the presents truly mean nothing compared to what you have to say. I'd prefer a long well written card compared to a gift anyday. He sounds sweet, I dont think hes being ungrateful.

I guess it depends if you usually do that. I always right some sappy in my husbands cards and he writes his equivalent of sappy or to show his love for me. And not just on holidays- it’s important to express feelings often not just holidays and birthdays. Maybe the words and feeling are what matter the most to him.

He sounds pretty dang ungrateful, his birthday isnt the only time where you should "spill your guts" you've been together for a long time and its clear that you put alot of thought into his gifts and his birthday.

I am the exact same way as your husband. My husband hands me the world with gifts, and then will give me a card that says happy birthday baby, I love you. I always ask for more in my card. I love to read meaningful words, especially coming from him. You didn't screw up badly, but maybe tell him how you feel about celebrating another birthday with him.

Awe he must just be in his “feels” today. My husbands birthday today and I was going to buy him a card and new boots, but instead he wanted to order a new gaming computer, so that all added to be around $1,200. So it was pretty expensive... I didn’t get him anything. I did make him a monster cookie cake, which is one of his favorites. So he took it to work with him. Oh and we did go to a steak dinner with his parents, sister, grandma, and my mom last night.
