Antidepressants in pregnancy
Hi there-Sorry long post
So I was taking a low-dose SSRI—Celexa—(antidepressant medication) under dr guidance during pregnancy. My prescribing dr (psychiatrist) and OB both indicated there was no risk for baby and it was safe to take.
After I gave birth the nurses at the hospital presented this brochure to me about NAS (neonatal abstinence syndrome) and they explained that they thought baby was born calm instead of crying and had some nervous system jerky movements due to my antidepressant medication. I was made to feel like I’d been taking an elicit substance and had had a baby addicted to opiates or cocaine or something.
I later talk to my pediatrician and then my dr about it and they say that everything my baby experienced at birth is normal and typical and the nurses shouldn’t have scared me like that. I was told they had to tell me about NAS as a CYA kind of thing but my baby didn’t really have that.
Everything is fine with baby no issues at all. I just felt shamed by the nurses for taking care of my mental health during pregnancy. I was heartbroken and made to feel like I was an irresponsible mother. I’m wondering if anyone else experienced anything like this??
Sorry long post.
