When to pump?

Question

First time mom here, wondering when I should begin pumping. My breast feeding class at the midwife center suggested no pumping or pacifiers for the first month. Doulas and Lactacian consultants at the hospital suggested I start now. Thoughts? Suggestions?  Reasons why or why not? I appreciate it.

With my first son i didnt pump or give pacifier fkr the first month because of the same reason ! Second time around i startwd pumling the second week and gave in on the pacifier the third week! Trust me it makes no difference at least not for my son, but for some people pumping early does diminish their supply ! The only reason they suggest not using a binky is because they think the baby wont eat and replaces the binky with feeding but my son is a month old and wont take it if hes hungry !! Hope that helps💕

You can pump whenever you want and save it. My 4 week old has a pacifier a bottle and nipple and does amazing. Of course it’s different for every baby, but you can try!

Same here my first I waited a month.  This time I started at about 1.5 weeks and already almost have a weeks worth of milk frozen for when I go back to work.  We are 17 days PP

I’ve been pumping since day 3. I was trying to get my milk to come in and usually pump after a feeding to build up my milk more. They say not to pump because you will over produce. Not an issue for me!

We use a soothie pacifier and Avent Natural bottles since 7 days. She is now 16 days old. We haven’t had any nipple confusion at all, and I’m also still using a Medela Nipple Shield occasionally. (I have really flat nipples and large areolas that make it hard for LO to latch on to since she has a small mouth) I like to pump about 15 mins after she has eaten and pump for 10-15 mins per breast. I only do this 3-4 times a day as I struggle with low supply now. At first, I pumped after every feeding while still in hospital (week stay in NICU) but it caused me to have lots of milk and I almost gagged my LO due to my strong let down. Lol. Just gotta find what works for you. Stay well hydrated as well. Drink at least a bottle of water every few hours.

I started pumping when my baby was about a week old. I don’t pump a ton because I worry about oversupply. Lately I have been just using my milk catcher on the opposite breast that she is nursing on. I can catch up to 2.5 or 3 oz just while she is nursing sometimes! I save all of that for bottles (for hubby to help) and to freeze in storage bags. I have been pumping once maybe twice on the days I actually pump at all. I have an aggressive let down so I worry that lots of pumping will only encourage this and cause my baby to choke when she first starts nursing! I would maybe try pumping now but start slow and don’t overdo it!

I’ve been pumping since I gave birth and my baby is 4 weeks old now. Just don’t over pump because you will end up with too much of a supply,
