*update* Chickadees are worth rescuing too!! 😫

Yesterday, my daughter saved an egg from some sparrows that were destroying a chickadee nest. They had already killed one of the babies and kept chasing the mom and dad chickadee off so they could take their nest box. It’s a box she’s been watching so she was absolutely devastated (she’s 15).

She brought the egg in and called me in tears. I told her to put it in a bowl with some paper towel and put it under our tortoise’s lamp until I could get home and figure out what to do.

Well, this happened

So I’m like AHHH I was kind of hoping it would never hatch! 😂 I started calling a bunch of wildlife rescues and got the same responses

“It’s just a chickadee”

“Put it back outside and let nature take its course”

“We don’t deal with such common animals here”

😭😭😭😭😭

I refuse to put this baby out to die but holy shit how do you take care of a naked hatchling?

So google google google continue to try to find a wildlife rescue fully expecting this little guy to die overnight.

This little pumpkin has an extraordinary will to live though!

Lots of food mess there, sorry, getting food into a baby bird’s mouth is more difficult than it looks.

Today he’s stronger and louder and doing everything he should!

It’s totally illegal to keep a wild bird though so I’m still calling places around my state trying to find SOMEONE willing to take this poor baby.

In the meantime, I’m going to keep feeding it and hope for the best because it’s not JUST A CHICKADEE and it deserves a chance at life too 😫❤️❤️❤️

UPDATE ——-After 6 days of caring for this baby who seemed to be thriving, he developed a “click” in his breathing yesterday afternoon. From having cared for baby chicks many times, I knew he had developed pneumonia and his chances were slim. Increased his heat and mixed some natural bird-safe antibiotics into his food but he passed away by this morning. I know we gave him the only chance he had though so I’m happy we helped out.
