Lip ring

Is it normal for your lip ring to need time to "settle in"? I've have my lip pierced for about 8 months and I only just changed the stud to a ring and it's a little bit tender, to be fair I have hooked it on a few things by accident but it was a tad tender after I first put it in and I wasn't sure if it's normal or if I should be worried (I would ask to my piercer but due to my current situation I am unable to) any tips or advice would be appreciated
