Newborn weight gain

I’m looking for advice and/or permission to ignore my pediatrician.

My baby is about 2 1/2 weeks old and as of last week hadn’t reached his newborn weight of 8 lbs. 9 oz. He was at about 8 lbs. 7 oz. and so they asked me to come back for a lactation consultant visit. (This was also two days short of the official 2 weeks!)

At the visit we saw that I was transferring milk OK but they asked me to start pumping after each feed and then feeding him an ounce of breastmilk after each feed. Since then I’ve been back for weight checks every other day and on a ridiculous regimen of pumping after each feed for 20 minutes and feeding my baby an extra ounce of breastmilk in a bottle after each feeding. (Which he almost always spits up!)

Today he was only 8 lbs. 6 oz. when we got there but he was due for a feeding. So after the feeding he was 8 pounds 9 1/2 ounces but they considered him still to be underweight and asked me to change the regimen again-having me pump after each feeding throughout the night as well.

At this point he’s eating normally on the breast and otherwise completely healthy. Are these few ounces really that big of a deal especially if he’s at weight after a feeding? He was also born at 42 weeks and I read that sometimes the fat they build after 40 weeks burns off faster.

If he was fed prior to his appointment today he would’ve been at birth weight. I want to ditch all the ridiculous pumping regimen and just go back to breast-feeding every three hours and as needed. And I certainly would like to wait at least a couple of days before going back for a weight check. My gut tells me that my baby is totally fine but I’m just scared that if there is something wrong I’ll have ignored the doctors recommendation.
