I recently just met my boyfriend’s family. They were all smiling and welcoming me to the family. Everything seemed to go so well until last night. He told me that his uncle sat him down and had a conversation with him about our relationship. I have never met his uncle. Now, I am African American(Black) and he comes from a traditional African family. His uncle basically told him that it was disrespectful of him to bring me to meet his family and that it is their job to choose a wife for him. He does not want this but of course he did not argue against it. His uncle then went on to say that some girls can be distracting and only want babies to go after the man’s income only to put the man on child support. Am I wrong for taking that personal and assuming that he was trying to put me in a box and enforce negative stereotypes on me? Also, my boyfriend is willing to go against what his family thinks but is it worth all of the trouble? We’ve been dating for a year.
