Moving out tips

My sister and I want to move out together, but rent is high for our incomes around here and we’ve been thinking about buying a small home together, such as a mobile home, just to get out of our current living situation. How bad of an idea would that be? Is there anything we could do to get free or discounted housing? (I’m pretty sure all the subsidized housing around here requires you to have a child or be disabled.)
