Is it possible to be diagnosed with twins late?

I don't know if this is paranoia, gas, or both, but I feel kicks in two different areas and I'm only 21 wks. This never happened with my first 2 so I'm a little freaked out. 😬
I had a 12 wk scan and it looked like just one baby, but is it possible to be diagnosed late with twins? 
Someone please tell me that I'm just letting the hormones get to me...

Baby could be getting you with hands and feet at the same time. Mine likes to hang out transverse. She’ll kick me on one side and poke me way on the other side.

Would be extremely unlikely. You will feel baby in different areas at one time, hands and feet hit out in different directions.
