Independent boyfriend

So I told my bf that we have to communicate as I saw him being cold and dry with me lately and didn’t ask to see me in two weeks and it bothered me but he said he didn’t know he upset me he didn’t notice himself being like that so I told him what upset me and he said well I will just have to start putting more effort and he said that he’s just more independent. Is what he saying a bad thing?
