i’m 14 and going to see a therapist for the first time. i often feel really hopeless and have suicidal thoughts. and i’m getting put on meds most likely but i’m really struggling on what i should and shouldn’t tell them.. ik i’m supposed to be honest but i don’t wanna go to a mental hospital or anything. will they have to report me? or will they just put me on meds or something

They only report it if they think you are a danger to yourself or others. That doesn't necessarily mean that if you tell her about suicidal thoughts she will report it. She will most likely ask more questions and evaluate for herself how you are doing and how likely you are to hurt yourself. She's there to help so don't hold back out of fear for what may happen. The more honest you are with her the more she's going to be able to get a feel for where you are and help you. Therapists aren't as scary as people make them out to be.

You can say you've had suicidal thoughts with no plans, no attempts. They'll likely ask how often you thought about this, I would downplay that if you don't like more prying. Relate the thought to negative events like a fight with a friend or parents, or maybe once a month around the time of your period. I would tell the therapist these because it would be nice to get some help in how to cope with the thoughts. You don't want to spiral deeper into a worse situation and make it too late to save you. If you are not actively a danger to yourself or to others, you will not be committed to a hospital. Be willing to work with your therapist on whatever treatment is advised. Do take this seriously!
