Child support help!!

My son is 19 months and his father has hardly ever helped. He lived 10 minutes away and saw him once a week, if that. Then he moved an hour away and saw him even less. He drives trucks and is about to go on the road again, and when he’s on the road he provides no financial assistance. I’m putting him on child support and was wondering if he could get custody? Or what can i do to get the best outcome for me and my son
