Okay, I know it’s been 13 years since I’ve had a baby, but someone please tell me when did it become a thing to “ask your baby for permission” before changing their diapers!? I just read an article that said we need to start establishing a trusting environment by asking before changing them. Huh?

I’d I had to ask permission, my daughters diaper would never be changed. 
Me: “Ok time to change your diaper”
Daughter: “Nooooo!”

I don’t ask our son’s permission, but I do say things like “let’s go change your diaper” or “do you need a new diaper?” But he’s also 19 months old and we’re trying to get him to communicate more. At six months old, I would say things like “time for a diaper change” or something like that because it’s good to narrate what you’re doing for language development.

Thankfully it is not a thing yet. Just something a few so called experts are saying and it has gained a lot of attention because of how insane it is. And of course a few people agree because they will agree with anything if someone looks professional wile saying it and uses the right buzz words

I ask my son but it’s not bc of some random “expert” saying I should. It helps my son feel like it’s his choice and creates independence. I say “Noah can mommy change your diaper please” most times he’ll come over sit down and let me change it. If I don’t let him think he has a choice then it’s just a fight.

While I agree that there are circumstances where the child should be able to have a choice in something... a diaper change is not one of them. 😂
My son wouldn’t be potty trained by now if I gave him a choice, lmfao.

Thanks for everyone’s input but here’s the thing. I’m not asking anything! My son is a baby! I check to see if he needs a fresh diaper, I pick him up, put him on his changing table, and I change his diaper. There is no way I will ever ask permission to do what I’m supposed to do anyway. And another thing, where were these silly ideologies when I was growing up? No one asked my permission, and I turned out almost perfect! As a matter of fact, there weren’t even “experts” saying to do this nonsense. Nope, I’m good on the foolery. 🤷🏿‍♀️🤦🏿‍♀️

It’s not so much asking permission as implying that you are. Obviously it has to be done, but teaching bodily autonomy can start as early as diaper years. I say “you need a diaper change, mommy is going to change you”. Letting your child know what you are about to do to their body isn’t a bad thing.

I ask my baby “you want a diaper change” or say “let’s change your diaper” as a way to talk about what we’re doing, to help with communication, I don’t care about consent because he’s not old enough to give consent or to understand he’ll get a rash.
