starting birth control at 14 y/o?

Hi! I'm wondering if I'm too young to start birth control, not because I'm sexually active or anything like that but my periods are pretty heavy and long and very irregular, I didn't have my period from October until now and it's currently my 12th day and it's still as heavy. I heard that it can help regulate it but I'm scared of any sort of side effects. Is there any actually? I really want to start but I'm not sure how and I don't know that much about it :/
