Hand-me-down wedding ring

CW

This is not my personal problem but some else's I know.

Her boyfriend proposed to her (which, congrats!) with a wedding ring that was his grandmothers. Which is not a problem to her. She knows some families just do that and thinks it's cute. I think it's cute too, actually. Her problem is that she works at bedside as a RRT. Meaning, she is in a hospital working hands on with patients and their bodily fluids every night. Of course she wears gloves and does everything she's supposed to to keep "clean", but if you've ever worked or maybe just been in a hospital you know nothing is probably ever as clean as you hope. You wouldn't eat off the nurses station no matter how many times you see it get wiped down. There's also a issue with harsh chemicals being used which could harm the metal ring and the diamond on the top of the ring being sharp enough to just tear through gloves.

So, this is not a good place for a ring like this, she thinks. That said, a lot of people wear "dummy rings" made of rubber as a wedding ring at work and change to their normal ring at home. Except most people I know who wear those eventually end up wearing that rubber ring constantly and never touch the real one again.

She doesn't want to wear a ring that she has to change every time she goes to work or that will get nasty at work. Is she wrong/rude for requesting another ring that is both better for her needs and that is more her style?

[I told her she's marrying him and not his family. If he's ok with it then they can suck it up and sound respect that she doesn't want to damage their heirloom at her job.]
