The name Jami?

We just had our baby and I had planned to name her Jāmi but the lady that took the birth certificate information said that we could not use a special character. I understand that not everybody even knows what the special character (macron) over the ‘a’ does or how it changes the pronunciation, but I’m concerned that without it people will more easily mis pronounce her name.

For specific reasons I don’t want to change the spelling but I’d like to see how many people could still potentially pronounce this correctly if I still used the spelling without the special a. We would still use it unofficially but everything from her birth certificate to license and official school records would not show it.

Help me out and let me know how you would phonetically pronounce the name Jami if you saw it??
