Pacific Islander's opinion, please

Do you have Pacific Islander heritage? I have a question for you...

For context; my husband, 1 yr old son, and I are white (Scandinavian heritage).

My son is absolutely obsessed with the movie Moana, especially the character Maui. He would think it would be unbelievably cool to dress up as Maui for Halloween (think grass skirt, giant fish hook, and maybe a long black curly wig. No tattoos - I personally feel that would be too close to cultural appropriation) but it is VERY important to us that we respect other people's cultures. Would it be ok for him to be Maui for Halloween or should we just choose something else and keep enjoying the movie?
