Spreading democracy.

Based on the recent post about going to other nations to missionize and preach one's religion, I got thinking about the notion of spreading/implementing democracy around the world, which was very much a feature of the George W. Bush era and carried on, I would argue, under Obama. How do you feel about that? Is it appropriate to impose democratic systems on countries that may not want it and is it morally acceptable to do so at the end of a gun to achieve a certain nation/international bloc's foreign policy goals?

Bonus question: Has preaching democracy taken on a religious dimension/fervour and if so, does that make it more or less reprehensible?
