Deserved backlash? Meundies

So this account I follow that makes cute underwear prints released a Harry Potter collection, there was a ton of backlash and many people openly expressed how they will no longer be supporting the company. They then made a post addressing the concerns, basically by saying J.K Rowling will not be profiting from this in any way shape or form and that they still, and will always support the LGTBQ+ community.
I feel that the backlash was unnecessary personally, I understand how people could be upset over it. But Harry Potter is a very popular series and its kind of hard to pretend it just doesn't exist, perhaps maybe the timing of the launch was insensitive.
What are your thoughts on this? Should they have not launched it? Maybe they should have started off by stating none of the profits go to Rowling? Do you think they deserved the backlash and to lose their support?

The backlash is unnecessary. As they said, Rowling won’t be profiting. Are we supposed to hate HP now because of Rowling’s views?? Seems silly

I couldn’t care less about what they designs they use for underwear. If the LBGTQ+ community wants to boycott Rowling then they don’t have to buy the underwear. It’s simple. 
Isn’t the CEO of Chick fil A open about how he believes gay marriage is wrong? You don’t see them closing every Chick fil A. They’re actually quite profitable. 🤷🏻‍♀️

It could've been avoided if they launched and told people up front that she wouldn't be receiving profits. That being said, even with everything she's done, Harry Potter is a big part of millions of peoples' lives and I can't blame them for wanting to latch onto a corner of that market - this has probably been in the works long before her statements. It's like getting angry at the Etsy or Redbubble sellers for making HP merch (obviously not to the same scale, but MeUndies is still an "indie" brand from my understanding).

I don’t think we should throw out Harry Potter altogether, but I wouldn’t personally buy any branded products. It just feels icky, whether she directly benefits of not.  
If the company is really serious about supporting the LGBT+ community they would donate a portion of proceeds to benefit the trans community, a trans youth project would fit perfectly here, instead of just posting empty messages while profiting off of a notable TERF’s work.

Shes entitled to her views. I personally like to look at her work as a separate thing. Idc about her views. Its not incorporated into her work so 🤷

I don’t think they deserved backlash — it seems like an indie company, I personally would have assumed it wasn’t going to her in any way because they are indie. But ... from a business perspective, this particular company should have included in some way that royalties were not going to JKR, just to avoid any possible backlash. 
I think it’s important to be aware and shop as responsible as you can (I know it can be a privilege to be able to do so). I mean, That’s the whole reason I don’t get CFA. 🤷🏻‍♀️ I don’t care if the company makes money. They just aren’t getting *my* money to use for their BS and who they support. 
It is the whole point for the community to say, “don’t shop HP gear”, especially with companies that earn JKR royalties of any kind. Her world of HP was all about inclusiveness and being who you are, that it’s okay to be different. That’s why it’s such a huge deal that she has these transphobic beliefs. It’s heartbreaking, not just for the LGBTQIA* community, but for allies as well. That’s not what HP was about.

She's seeing none of the profits, so it was 100% unnecessary. She may have created the Harry Potter world, but it's the fans that truly make it live. The actors have shown their disappointment in Rowling and constantly speak out against her. Many of us found comfort within those books and movies long before she showed how ignorant she was and are able to separate the creation from the creator
