How do you split financials when on mat leave?

I’m self employed and can’t rely on government assistance during my 4 month mat leave. My husband agreed to take care of the fam during this time. We just bought a house and he has to work extra hard, overtime and he’s spending a ton of money to keep our family boat afloat. 
I feel so bad!! I can only contribute a little because I make a lot less than him. Is this a normal arrangement between couples?

To me it’s a bit weird that your husband had to agree to take care of the family... I would have thought that is just a given?? Don’t feel bad at all, you are doing work! Having a baby. Just because society doesn’t reward you with money for doing it doesn’t mean it’s leas valuable.

Save your money now for when your on leave ? I have to pay the same as what im paying now its 50/50?

All our money goes into one pot.. I’m putting heaps aside into savings from us both too in the meantime. I get 18 weeks mat pay and after that he’ll cover us until I go back to work after 9 months leave and we’ll have our savings as backup!

Yes it's normal. You 2 are 1 unit. If 1 person can't work, the other steps up. Same happened when my husband was having medical issues. I had to step up and do more, do all the chores etc. You need to be home with your newborn.

I am self employed and my husband makes more money than I do. We split all bills 50/50 except he pays 2/3 of the mortgage. I have an Aflac policy that will help supplement my income while on leave and I have been building up my savings account so I can continue paying my portion. I am also taking 4 months maternity leave this time.
