Do you think medical program admissions will change?

Question

So with the huge hits we've had due to Covid, medical communities have been suffering.
Do you think this will change the prerequisites to get in? Maybe they'll make it easier to get into, or there'll be more grants and scholarships. Right now wait lists are long and they're highly competitive to get into, I wonder if in the near future they'll make the process less strenuous. 
Is this something you see happening? 
Do you think there should be changes? 
Should it stay the same? 
I was curious cause I know my cousin who is an RN wanted to get employment elsewhere and her hospital did everything they could to keep her, a lot of the older nurses retired and many quit cause of the risk of Covid. 
I've noticed it in my facility as well, and I can't blame anyone for leaving cause at the end of the day they have to do what's best for them and their family. 
I just wonder if due to all this if colleges will change their criteria.

I support making college considerably more affordable  I don’t support lowering standards. Those programs take years anyway. By the time students applying now are graduated, we should be past the critical period for Covid.

I'm  all for admissions being easier as long as they keep the cirriculum/program and standards the same to get licensed as before. Quality over quantity for me.

We’ve had a lot of trouble staffing my facility too.  We are all burned out.  I can get behind more grants/scholarships or making tuition cheaper, but I do not agree with lowering standards for admissions.  I’m a cna & there’s been a lot of times where I’ve had to correct  nurses on medication/mar stuff & we don’t need more of that.

Decrease cost but do not decrease standards. 
US has been having an issue with NPs practicing independently without having set standards for NP school and bridge programs, and the US medical community had been negatively vocal about it in social media.

No, but I think hospitals are about to get a wake up call about how they treat staff. You can’t decrease requirements to graduate, even if you decrease requirements to get in, and colleges don’t want to have higher failure rates. Lowered graduation requirements would just lead to increased malpractice. More government offered scholarships? Sure. Hospitals paying off the entirety of student loans with a lengthy contract? Also likely. You’re going to see salary hikes, at the very least. 
I also think we’re looking at the start of severe economic downturn, and the medical field is a steady job. In recessions/depressions, people are going to find the most stable path that they can.

My husband is a current third-year medical student. I don’t support lowering the standard to get into medical school. It’s competitive and difficult to get into because not everyone is cut out to be a doctor. With that said, COVID changed a lot of how his school functions, that very much impacts his class and the current fourth-year class graduating this year. They limited the number of away rotations they can do, and unless you, as a fourth year, are planning on going into something super competitive (orthopedic surgery, interventional radiology, dermatology), the school banned you from doing audition rotations away from your rotation hub site. Which is a complete joke. The match process will be very interesting this year, especially if most schools do match interviews over the phone or Zoom rather than in person. Historically a lot of top candidates turn down match interviews because they’re in demand and can’t swing going to every single interview, which opens up interview spots for lesser candidates. If that’s online now, then there will be tons of unmatched students this March and tons of unfilled residency spots, which will be mayhem to try and scramble. Anyhoo, the only difference I think needs to happen within medical school specifically is increasing the number of scholarships available. My husband’s school has a class size of 150, and offers a total of 2 scholarships for the entire class. The state then offers 5 additional for those that can promise to stay in the state and are going into primary care. So there’s 7 scholarships available between 150 students. Unless you get private scholarships, which are few and far between for medical school, you’re on your own to pay for it.

For supply and demand like this, providing grants or scholarships to make medical school more affordable seems very reasonable.. lowering the standards for that education is not.

Should it happen? Absolutely! Will it? No
I think it will get even more competitive because class sizes will be reduced due to having less students in a room. 
Also, sadly grants and scholarships are being cut in some schools. So there might be less money to give to a deserving student. 
As for employment, elective surgery staff got cut or reassigned when Covid came about. Once the numbers went down, friends that worked their butts off had their benefits frozen. Not fair at all!

No, I do not think standards should be lowered. 
Nurses, doctors, CNAs, etc. literally have peoples’ lives in their hands. Lower costs/have more financial help for sure, but don’t get lazy with the criteria these people have to meet.
