What’s is called when a parent thrives from son’s misfortune?

This is about my MIL and husband. She thrives from the pity and attention she gets when her son struggles. She is usually the cause for the struggle to begin with. My MIL is real piece of work, let me tell you. Anyway, what’s this called…a slight variation of Munchusen by proxy or something else? Maybe just a terrible person? Help me understand.
