A partner who can’t take accountability

I’ve been with my boyfriend for 5 years and last year was ridiculously rough for us. His finances slowed down and he became such a grump! No one’s happy when their money isn’t how it used to be so I was understandable as usual. We’re just now slowly getting back to being on track but the new problem is everything I do he takes personal and is really having a hard time taking accountability for the smallest things ever. I love him but he’s miserable right now and if I tell him he’s miserable he might lash out 😂 has anyone successfully dated/ married a person who struggles with taking accountability for their actions. Could be something small like he didn’t take the trash out so now it’s smelling he will find a reason to flip it so the attention isn’t on his mistake.
