What are your thoughts? Swearing...

Question

Theres a lot of stigma around kids swearing, and its a taboo subject to talk about. But i honestly couldnt care less if my kids swear. The only time i dont find it acceptable is when it is used to hurt or harass someone. Like if you fall or hurt yourself, youre frustrated, you swear, its a natural response now. I know teachers and parents will hate me when my kids grow up but we will deal with that in years to come.

We swear in front of our kids. (5 and 1 1/2) not at them (or about them), not at each other (or about each other), but we do swear. Even if we didn't, they're going to hear it somewhere at some point. That said our 5 yr old sometimes swears. She'll bonk her head and be like "ooof fuck, that hurt!" Like yea, I bet it did...you alright? We don't do adult words or good/bad words. We just tell her those are home words. You are free to say them at home, but when we leave, you leave them at home. She's really good about not swearing anywhere other than at home. She's in ballet and we haven't had any chats with the studio director because she's swearing in class or anything. We go to Grandma's and she doesn't swear there either. Because Grandma's isn't home. If we swear anywhere other than at home she gets on us 🤣 mom! That's a home word!

I don’t get what the big deal is about swearing. They’re just words. They have a time and place. We try and censor our language because our 3.5 year old will repeat it and doesn’t quite understand that he can’t just go around swearing. He’d give my grandma a heart attack if she heard him say something “inappropriate” lol. 
As our kids get older they can swear at home, within reason. They don’t need to go around and say “oh fucking shit bitch” but if they get hurt or something and the word pops out, oh well. We’ll teach them that those words can’t be used outside of our home.

Me and my husband (more my husband) say bad words infront of our kids sometimes. But they know not to say it. When they're older and they understand how to be more respectful about it. Then that's different. But I don't like when i hear it from kids all the time. Almost every sentence has a curse word in it. It's disrespectful to others around them.

I do not allow my kids to cuss. We swear in front of them all the time but they know not to do it. They're 12, 8, 6, & 2.  I dont cuss in front of my own parents either. Just seems inappropriate to me. Lol

When my kids were little I didn't use to swear. Now a days I get told of by my 16 year old about it. Lol He even sat his 14 year old brother and 21 year old sister down and told them off for swearing and using slang in front of me. Lol He never swears. He and my husband are the ones that never swear in our family.

Yeah, I agree there's a big difference between swearing and swearing AT someone. That's definitely rude and not something I want to model for my 2 year old. 
But, the whole "bad word" thing seems extreme to me. When I was a kid I thought it would be funny to say "bloody hell" in front of my prim and proper British grandma. Well she wasn't impressed and threatened to wash my mouth out with soap. 😂 Ahh the good old days....
My husband and I definitely swear, but it's a bit more censored now that our daughter is becoming a little parrot.

I swear in my daily speech. I have a 7yo and a 1 year old. They don’t repeat (yet for my 1yo). Idc what ppl think of me. My kids are happy, healthy, and very bright.  I couldn’t ask for more.

I’m pregnant with my first now. My family is Italian so I grew up hearing curse words pretty young. My husbands family is Irish and conservative and they do not curse ever really. My husband and I will curse around each other but plan on scaling back majorly when baby comes. I don’t want my kid to think someone is going to go to hell for saying a bad word, or even think less of them, but I think it’s unbecoming when you hear 3,4,5 year olds etc curse. I think for me the biggest thing is, kids don’t have the best discernment regarding when it’s appropriate to curse and when it isn’t, and I think it’s important to have the self control needed to have an intelligent convo without cursing. We all know those people who just come across as tacky because they’re tone deaf with their language. I think by teaching kids not to curse, but not making it a huge deal, you sort of remove the “forbidden fruit” that cursing sometimes is and it just becomes a word that they can choose to say when they’re older and have environmental discretion

My family wouldn't let us swear in the house, my husband's family would and onr thing I've noticed...both sides swear like saylors BUT my side knows how to turn it on and off in different situations probably bc we had to practice at a young age "we can swear with friends but not at home" whereas my husband's family swears whenever, whoever theyre with and doesn't seem to see when it can be appropriate or in appropriate. With seeing how this all played out, we've decided no swearing in the house. Obviously if there is a slip or so.ething that's one thing but no openly swearing. Oh and my husband's family has also used it against eachother so even if you say swearing is allowed just not against eachother, when things get heated, it's natural for swears to start flying!
