Should someone offer to throw a baby shower or you just do it yourself ?

I’m not from America and we don’t have baby showers. I saw only in movies. And when we got pregnant we threw a party ourselves in my husband’s hometown, bc no one would travel to where we live now and I don’t have anyone in this country. We paid for everything but the cake, my MIL insisted. But I see a lot of posts and talks about how someone else throws a party for the mama to be. Is it true?

We’re expecting 2 baby and wondering what should I do? I just don’t feel like traveling 5 hours in the plane with a belly and a toddler to have a party that we have to plan and pay. I just want for once my in laws do something for us without being asked. What do you think?
