Tdap shot during pregnancy, should I get it?

Did anyone get the tdap vaccine during pregnancy? Did you have any side effects? Is it necessary? I didn’t get it with my first baby a few years ago. My doctor told me at my last appointment they would offer the vaccine at my next visit if I want it, should I get it this time or is it no big deal? I honestly don’t really even know what is it or what it’s for. I’m having my baby at the end of next month.

Tdap protects most notably against whooping cough which can be fatal in newborns. By getting vaccinated while pregnant, your baby receives their first dose of this vaccine in utero so they are protected from birth. Tdap is usually given as a two dose vaccine, but by getting it while pregnant you save your baby having to get a second dose, so they will only need one shot after birth. If you are planning to vaccinate your child, then it absolutely makes sense to get the shot yourself while pregnant.

I have nothing against vaccines but I did not get Tdap. The research backs it’s safety. However, I had multiple losses and didn’t want to introduce anything new to my body while pregnant. I did extensive research and about 65% of women get the shot, and there are less than 40 deaths from whooping cough each year in the US. 
My doctors thankfully understood my anxiety and reasoning (I wanted my baby to get vaccinated once he was outside of me and could be individually monitored). So we proceeded with that care plan and got vaccinated after birth. It is worth having a conversation with your doctor so you can develop a care plan around your choice.
