Nipple shields

Finally broke down and bought a nipple shield for nursing my newborn. She’s 3 days old and would only nurse for about 5 minutes before quitting. My nipples were in so much pain so I figured I’d give a shield a go. Holy cow has it made a difference! She’s up to breastfeeding for 15 minutes now and is staying awake more throughout the day, finally. I have read where nipple shields are not suppose to be a permanent solution, but I don’t see how using it will hurt? Anyone have any input about this?
