Was I wrong for saying this ? Everyone's mad at me

I was at a friend's party ( a family friendly event with kids) and I brought my 6 year old. A few hours in he had really had it and was over being there and started to whine about wanting to leave and I had him wed leave soon I was just helping clean up. He wasn't misbehaving or anything he wasn't being annoying he had understandably had enough because it was a loud event. One of the older women said if he was hers he'd stop asking to leave real fast and she made a hand gesture like she was smacking him. And she said she never had an issue with any of her kids because she hit them or hit them with a shoe or belt. Others laughed and said that's what I needed to do to make him respect me. I said to them " thanks for the advice but we don't abuse children in my house" in a very flat matter of fact tone, not confrontational. They all took offense because they said it was their "culture" to raise kids that way and I needed the advice. Even the younger women of the family were offended because they all hit their kids as punishment for every little thing.

Now my friend is mad because I "disrespected" her elder family members and their culture. Am I really in the wrong here ?
