What education for your child?

What educational path did you choos for your child(ren) and what lead you to that decision?

My husband and I are homeschooling. There are a million reasons why.  Such as a lack of trust the schools in our very snack town can properly educate our children. We're in my husband's home town and I experienced the education system here and it was far below the education system in my hometown an hour away. We also don't agree with things being taught in the public school system. We also prefer a much more flexible schedule since my husband is law enforcement and his schedule is volitile and wouldnt get to see the kids much. We also both feel that public school is far too similar to prison. Our oldest was recommended by her pediatrician, allergist, nutritionist, and dietitian to not go into public school due to her extream food allergies putting her in danger. She's one of those kids with nightmare food allergies that even opening a package of the same food will send her into anaphylaxis and her epi-pens might not save her it's so bad. There's also the insanely dangerous culture within the kids themselves. For example my hometown I had to keep my head down and mouth shut to avoid getting killed. I regularly had to fight for my life going home in the 5th grade. I also expereinced a lot of molestation every single grade level until high school. In the school system in my husband's hometown (where we live) there's a rape culture that I also almost fell victim to. My husband and I also know we can give our children much higher quality education than what's provided in our tiny town. We plan to travel a lot and show our kids the world. Homeschooling gives us that opportunity. Homeschooling also gives our kids to pursue any and all passions. Hockey, archery, pottery, glass blowing? No problem we can make the drive to do those things and not have to worry about school hours or getting home too late and being tired the next day. Being a parent is hard and school is hard, we're just choosing our hard. All in all homeschooling will be a better education than public school, it gives us freedom, flexibility, and the chance to pursue passions. On the note of private school, there isn't a single private school within 2 hours of our home that we trust with our children.

The state school system here is an absolute mess, we have made the decision to send our son to private school as he will have far more opportunities to develop as an individual. He currently attends the nursery there and will start in reception in September. He’s a shy child, with amazing comprehension, this means that he does overthink things. We believe that the best thing for his self confidence and for his learning potential is to stay private.

My oldest went to private school for awhile, then we tried homeschooling. I saw his natural curiosity and love for learning decline in school especially after kindergarten. He was bored, and  they just gave him more and more paper work and homework to keep him busy, and he hated doing worksheet after worksheet. It got to the point he was miserable. I also dont agree with 6 year olds getting only 15 mins of recess by the time they line up to go in and out, meanwhile (no joke) about 50% of his class had an ADHD diagnosis. Kids especially prior to age 12 need to move their bodies frequently, play etc and learn through play/activities vs sitting at a desk producing paper after paper. If early elementary was more play based with more breaks I would probably have kept him in school. But I also didnt like that half my words to him seemed to be 'hurry up'....hurry up, get up, time to get breakfast, lets go, hurry up.....time to go get your shoes hurry...welcome home hurry up and have your snack so you can start your homework etc etc. We finally had enough. All 4 are homeschooled now. I dont think theres a 'right' choice for everyone, but we love it.

We plan to send our kiddo(s) to public school. I have seen firsthand too many children get screwed over mentally, emotionally, and socially by their parents opting for homeschooling or some online home education (aka my MIL and SIL screwing up their kids). I want my child to be successful, well rounded, and educated. I can’t provide that at home for several reasons. I am very career driven, and I would NOT be happy with homeschooling. My fiancé does not have the education to confidently teach at home. We live in a very, very low socioeconomic area where there are not a lot of adequate educational opportunities. The ONLY private school in our area is heavily religious, and that is just not our forte. I know several elementary and high school teachers on professional and personal basis. I am 120% comfortable with our school and school system. I don’t want to prevent my child(ren) from opportunities.
