Married couples: is it normal to do/get nothing for your significant other for Valentine's day?

Throughout the day today, I was thinking of what my husband *might* get me for Valentine's Day. I didn't expect anything big or extravagant at all. But he came home with nothing. He went to the store and got our son a plushie for Valentine's Day, so it's not like he wasn't already there and couldn't grab something real quick. I have to admit.. I was the slightest bit sad (I honestly just wanted a reason to eat some chocolate or something and to feel a tad bit special, lol) I didn't let my disappointment show at all, but I'm kinda sad he didn't think of me. I got him something small.  It's the thought that counts. I thought of him and I picked something out that I thought he'd enjoy.

We didn’t do anything. We did stuff with the kids. 
We discussed this though. We always discuss what we expect or don’t expect. Some years I suggest we have a nice dinner at home together. Some years I ask for a new plant. Some years I ask for nothing. 
We just had a tough 2 going on 3 weeks. It has wrecked our financials. Surviving the madness we just went through together is more than enough. 
Communication is key. 
Have you made it clear you want something? Do you typically get something for v-day? Do yall have normal traditions/expectations?

This is the problem, not communicating your expectations! You need to tell him exactly what you wrote here, because he can’t read your mind! Tell him, so he can do better for future “special” days.

It’s normal in my marriage. We have been married 6 years been together 7, we celebrate with our kids. We both find Valentine’s Day way over the top lol. We show we love each other every day not just one day.

We also don’t do anything on Valentines day but yes we do discuss it. We go big on birthdays and other days, just not valentines for some reason lol. We have date night every Friday though and yesterday was Friday

My husband and I have our wedding anniversary in two weeks. We celebrate that. We exchange cards for Valentine’s Day, but don’t really celebrate it. We did go buy flowers together because there were so many left over last night it was sad to see them wasted!

I think it can be normal yes . My husband and I don’t get each other gifts or do anything on Valentine’s Day . His mother also passed on Valentine’s Day 4 years ago so it’s been different for us. I don’t make a thing out of it . He’s gone above and beyond in the past . I made him a gift basket last year with a note and he didn’t get me anything . This year I didn’t do anything for him but he  got me something and told me not to get him anything .

We don’t do much for Valentine’s Day because I feel like it’s silly to have an overly commercialized made-up holiday for showing love for someone, you should be doing that every day of the year. My husband knows this and at most we get a card or make a slightly nicer than normal dinner at home. I honestly don’t know many people who indulge in the overconsumption to the effect that social media would like you to believe is necessary.
