Stepdad pressuring me into starting a business with him

My stepdad worked for my mom’s family business (construction) for about 20 years. My grandma fired him somewhat randomly right before Christmas last year. Since then he’s been looking for a job and doing freelance project management. He also receives a pension from the city since he was a police officer and retired a while ago.

I’m a licensed engineer and worked in construction for 1 year then for the government and now I’m a SAHM. I have no interest in starting a business in construction, I actually already have my own side business of beekeeping and it’s a lot of paperwork, time, and I just don’t want any more responsibilities with my 2 kids under 2. I also hated the construction industry for multiple reasons. I’m not an entrepreneur, it’s just not my strength.

My stepdad has been asking me for years now to start a business with him. He wants it to be a construction supply business like the one my grandma owns. She ‘owns’ it in name but my grandma did everything. My grandma isn’t tech savvy and honestly doesn’t really know anything about the business. She owns it in name because then they can have the ‘minority’ business owner designation and get advantages on jobs they bid. Sometimes the licensing board sends someone to interview her and it’s always a scary thing preparing her to sound like she’s in the loop.

My stepdad is saying I’ll just own the business in name, but he’d do all the work. I told him I’m not comfortable with that because if it’s in my name it’s only ethical for me to actually do the work… work that I don’t want to do. Then he says well I won’t have to do the work.

Isn’t this a weird proposition that he’s pressuring me into? I’m not going to do it, I just wonder if I’m being unreasonable and preventing him from doing this.
