Leaving without telling

I’m moving out today, once my partner goes to work. This was a 4 year relationship. He’s been abusive and we’ve been living as roommates the paper year and we both are miserable. We have nearly broken up before, 2 years ago, and tried all the things. But nothing changed and I’ve checked out. I feared telling him which is why I decided to leave while he’s gone. I will leave a letter. My name isn’t on the lease or anything. My question is, am I doing the right thing? We have no kids together, no financial responsibilities. Should I text or call him after I leave to let him know then? Should I call his parents? I still love and care for him. I feel bad for blind siding him but I did it this way so he wouldn’t try to hurt me or get angry or hurt himself.
