Unemployment question

I got fired from my job after needing to take off unexpectedly for 8 days after my 2 year old son had a Febrile seizure. He was extremely sick and being a single mother I had no choice but to take off. He was hospitalized for 7 days in the ICU.

My job told me today I was fired. I live in New York State and I’m wondering if I’m be able to go on unemployment in the meantime while finding a new job? I never got fired before. I was working at this job for a a year and a half.
