Be honest, would we be terrible to ask our son for money?

Our son turns 18 in a couple weeks. Once he turns 18 he will receive some settlement money from his old bordering school. He went to a school/program for troubled boys when he was 14 and I'll be honest this school had a million red flags. We just thought it was the only way to teach him to behave because he was skipping school, smoking weed, got in trouble with the law, many things. This program got shut down a few years ago because of the lawsuits. They were sued for physical, emotional, and sexual abuse and a lot of their staff was arrested for having inappropriate pictures and videos of the students. It was really bad. Everyone got a settlement. My son's settlement was a little over half a million. So he didn't get a tiny settlement. Everyone's payout was a little different depending on how severe the accusations were. I heard some only received about 5,000 but I believe every student received something. He receives that money when he turns 18. I know it's not good to ask your child for money but he does live at home. He's still on our insurance which is paying for his therapy. We are just in a few financial struggles right now. Our car is gonna cost more to fix than it's worth so my other kids have had to take the bus to school which they don't like because the bus driver is mean. Our garage door is broken. We are behind on our car payment so our car that doesn't even run is about to get repossessed. We just aren't doing too well. I get it's tacky to ask your child for money. I don't even think he remembered he was supposed to get it. I'm not saying he owes us anything because he doesn't. We haven't always done what was best for him but spent the last few years trying to fix it. He isn't obligated but since he will have it would it be bad to ask?
