Why he do this for Christmas?

I started seeing this guy sept of 2021 it wasn’t serious and it was new but Christmas came around he said he was buying me stuff I was shocked and wasn’t planing on getting him anything so when he told me that I got stuff for him. And he got me things. The next year 2022 we were still together and he didn’t get me anything. This year 2023 he said he was going to get me something this year and he didn’t.

So why would he buy my gifts the first year after like 3 months of hanging out but not 1 year or 2 years of being together?
